PD Dr. Alexander J. Eckardt received his medical degree in 1998 after studying at the Universities of Mainz (1991-1997) and Frankfurt (1997-1998). He spent his postgraduate training at the University-Hospital of Mainz from 1998-1999 and subsequently received his Internal Medicine training in the USA from 1999 to 2006. He absolved his Residency at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center of Boston (Tufts University), were he also acted as Chief Medical Resident. This was followed by a Gastroenterology Fellowship at UMass Memorial Medical Center (University of Massachusetts), where he also acted as Chief Fellow. He returned to Germany in 2006 and trained in advanced endoscopy at Charité Campus Virchow Klinikum (Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany) from 2006-2010 under the mentorship of Prof. Thomas Rösch. He received his German subspecialty degrees in 2007.
Dr. Eckardt is currently acting as a staff member at DKD Helios Klinik Wiesbaden (Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology). He received a degree as a private lecturer (Privatdozent, PD) in 2014 at the University of Mainz. In sum, Dr. Eckardt has published more than 50 articles and textbook chapters, mostly in the international literature. His main research focus has been endoscopic training and clinical outcome studies in endoscopy, subepithelial tumors of the GI tract and motility disorders, such as Achalasia. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the Massachusetts Medical Society and multiple German medical societies, including the German Gastroenterological Association (DGVS). He also acts a reviewer for multiple renowned journals in his field, including Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy.
He has received multiple teaching awards during his academic career and continues to have a scientific and clinical focus on training in Gastroenterology.
