Akira Sawaki, MD, PhD

Akira Sawaki was born in Nagoya, Japan. He received M.D. from Tottori University in 1991 and obtained Ph.D. degrees from Nagoya City University in 2007. He started his career as resident at Nagoya City University Hospital in Nagoya. He worked as clinical fellow at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital in 1993 and then moved as clinical stuff to Moriyama Municipal hospital, Narita Memorial Hospital and Nagoya City Jouhoku Municipal Hospital in 1995, 1997 and 2000, respectively. He returned to Aichi Cancer Center Hospital as medical stuff of gastroenterological department in 2001. At this time, he participated not only domestic multi-center trials including JCOG (Japanese Clinical Oncology Group) but also international trials like ToGA, AVAGAST and EXPAND study. From 2006, he doubled as an investigator at hospital and a researcher at Research Institute in Aichi Cancer Center, and researched the methylation of GIST. He worked as head of Medical Oncology Division of Nagoya Second Red Cross Hospital in 2011. He has contributed to Japanese clinical practice guidelines for gastrointestinal stromal tumors as a JSCO guideline member. He also established the patient association of rare tumor (GIST). Moving to Kawasaki Medical School in 2014, he has served as assistant professor in Department of Clinical Oncology.
