Tatsuo Kanda, MD, PhD

Tatsuo Kanda is a director of Sanjo General Hospital. Dr. Kanda graduated from Niigata University School of Medicine (NUSM) in 1985 and received his Ph.D. in Surgical Sciences from NUSM in 1991. After a 12-year career as a surgical oncologist, he was appointed associate professor of NUSM in 2001, and thereafter had been responsible for clinic and research for 10 years at the Division of Esophagogastric Surgery at the university hospital. Dr. Kanda is a council member of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, the Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Surgery, the Japanese Gastric Cancer Association, and the Japan Esophageal Society. He has published a large number of international peer-reviewed papers in surgical oncology with focus on the development of multidisciplinary treatments for GI malignancies. Dr. Kanda is also a world-renowned expert on molecularly targeted therapy for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and has served as a major coordinator of many nationwide clinical researches and trials of GISTs.
